I can fill in the blanks on all but one of the "unknowns", I think:

>Hazard Profile Part I

Probably from Soft Machine's BUNDLES.

Both of these are probably from the SUNBIRD half of THE THINGS YOU SEE/
SUNBIRD.

Gotta wonder about this. I suspect you may be write about this being a typo.

Almost gotta be from the Mark Varney Project's TRUTH IN SHREDDING.

>Gone Sailing

This one's from Soft Machine's BUNDLES.

Gee, I'm glad I didn't buy this compilation, since I think I have all the
originals except maybe for "Finery" if it's not really "Finally". :)

Re: The Things You See/Sunbird

There has been some questions about this Japanese import, this is what
I know to the best of my knowledge:

Originally, Sunbird was released separately from The Things You See.
However, when the Japanese decided to release The Things You See in Japan, they
demanded that "extra material" be included, otherwise they won't close the deal
to release The Things You See in Japan. That's where Sunbird came in. Sunbird
is a 4-track EP, with "The Gathering," "Halfway House," "Sunbird," and
"Second Summer." The track listing for The Things You See are:
	Golden Lakes
	Stop Fiddlin'
The Things You See (no vocals, very unlike the IOU version)
	Diminished Responsibility
	She's Lookin' I'm Cookin'
At the Edge (Allan sang on this one. Sounds like the IOU version of
The Things You See, with extra-strength melancholy)
	Up Country

This CD was released in Japan on July 21, 1992. Still a hot item in
the U.S. import market. I don't know if the European print(s) of these two
titles are still available.

Regarding the question of uchima@fncrd8.fnal.gov (Mike Uchima) :

"Rocks" was the first release from the Mark Varney Project (MVP). An
independent release by Mark Varney, his goal was to release music recorded by
(mostly unknown) jazz/blues players. The first release was called "Truth in
Shredding" featuring Frank Gamble and Allan Holdsworth. In reality, it was
really Frank's baby. Since there was no time to write, Frank chose some of
his favorite "covers" and improvised over them (check out Chick Corea's
"Hompty Dumpty"). The music was recorded live in the studio, and then Frank
sent the tape to Allan for him to overdub the solos. "Rocks" was the most
hard rocking tune on the CD, so don't expect the rest of the CD to sound like
it. Truth in Shredding is listed under Legato Records 1004-B. I got my copy
ordering direct from Legato. Their phone number is (916) 265-2171. However,
I've seen copies at Tower Records too.

This question has been asked before but I don't recall it ever being
answered: What does "Oneiric Moor" mean? When spelled backwards, it reads
"Room Cirieno." Does that mean anything in any language?

Hazard Profile Part I comes from Allan Holdsworth's work with Soft Machine,
on the Bundles CD. That's on "See For Miles Records Ltd.", stock SEE CD283.
That's a great disc - I recommend it highly. "Gone Sailing" also comes
from "Bundles."

"Rocks" comes from the MVP: Truth in Shredding disc, which contains similar
70's-ish sounding jazz-fusion performances.

The Holdsworth/Gordon Beck stuff probably comes from either "With a Heart
in my Song" or "The Things You See/Sunbord." The former is more recent
and contains more electronics, the latter was recorded some time ago and
is probably more of an ensemble or duo recording.

Yes, or course I'd buy copies of it. Regarding Warner Brothers, they also
own the rights to several Pat Martino Albums including Joyous Lake which
was his one "fusion" album. He really cooks on that. I guess all Martino's
early stuff has been re-released but not the Warner stuff.

Actually, I think it's probably a simple case of Allan finding an
instrument which suits his ever-changing tastes. He seems to trade off
to a new manufacturer every few years. My guess would be that he simply
gets tired of one thing and wants to move on to something else.
I don't really know anything about DeLap except that he is located in
Monterey, California (or was at this time last year); anyone else have
any details? I get the impression that he's not a mass-marketer, but
I really don't know.
I hadn't heard about the shutdown of Steinberger... do you have any
further info/pointers on that? I was hoping someday to find a place
that carried them, since I've never played one and was always curious
as to how they played. Of course, actually buying one would be out of
the question for me, owing to my severe lack of substantial income. ;)

I think others have pretty much covered the "source" question, so I
have only this to add: _Best Works_ was a completely unauthorized release,
and neither Allan nor any of his agents will receive one cent of royalties
payments for it.

Subject: Holdsworth Blurbs

Here's a few Holdsworth snippets for you:

- According to Iain Ballamy of Earthworks, Holdsworth and Bill Bruford
are about to embark on a new project together. Earthworks is on
temporary hiatus, but are still together.

- A certain dynamic duo known as Mike and Mark of Audiophile Imports,
certainly North America'a best fusion source, are vigorously
attempting to get Road Games on CD. These guys are heavyweights and
have some respect amongst Warner as well as Allan, so this looks like
a possibility. Incidentally, if it does happen, chances are it will
have different material from the original. Allan claims to have some
"killer" (his words) outtakes from those sessions that Warner passed
on and has expressed an interest in remixing the tracks for release.
However, in true Holdsworthian style, he is completely wishy-washy
about this, with his mood changing everytime you talk to him.

- The WT tour is over and Holdsworth and his band are going into the
studio within weeks to complete the last album for those dire
career-wrecking fucking assholes at Restless. Naturally, Allan's
mood is less than optimistic about its chances in the marketplace.
Somehow, I doubt we can expect a masterpiece out of this. Allan is
clearly disgruntled and rightfully so, with the state of things.
Allan's lucky he's not as hyper as I am. I'd likely walk into
Restless' offices with a club and starting beating people over the
head until they got their act together at this point.

- Akira Yada isn't helping the situation at all. This is strictly
my observation, but Mr. Yada needs to get his shit together and
quickly. I'm not certain he really has Allan's best interests in mind.

- Allan could not do anything in a legal sense to get those scumbags
at Jimco (japan) to stop making the Best Works bootleg. However, they
have stopped making them... for now.

More info to come.

you can post this to atavachron, I havn't had time to
update my mail aliases for the new address.

Holdsworth and company just flew in for the gig and
played on rented equipment.
They did not play a single fucking tune from
WardenClyfee tower. He announced about four new
tunes (three of them have names but Allan did not
pronounce them loud enough. After the gig, we( me,anil, & boshuck)
waited outside for the band. We asked him why no tunes from
WT, he shrugs, thinks about it, and then realizes that there
were no tunes from WT and says well we just played the same
set list from europe. Gary husband just flew in from Madrid and
arrived at the club half an hour before show time.
This week they start recording the new album. This album should
be completely devoid of guitar synth. he said that he tried finding
another synthaxe but the new one in question is not even working
reliably in studio.

The band was in ok form. mainly tunes from atavachron, new stuff
and a song or two from Sand with the obligatory devil take the
hind most.

near the top of the list.

By "different material" do you mean _additional_ material, Anil? I presume
you mean that all the original material _plus_ the outtakes you mention

As if the possibility of a simple CD reissue of the original ROAD GAMES EP

According to a Pulse magazine ad, this Mike Mainieri produced CD contains
renditions of Beatles tunes by Adrian Belew, Allan Holdsworth, John Abercrombie,
Ralph Towner, and a host of other jazz luminaries. Its supposed to be on sale
at Tower this month. After a week of fruitless calls to local Towers, I reread
the ad and it says in small print "look for Come Togeter towards the end of
August"! So does this mean that the CD will be on sale when we can't buy it and
then it won't be on sale when we finally can buy it?!?

According to Lynn (hi!) its mostly good with a few weak spots. I can think of
several possible covers Belew would do, but I'm really curious as to which tune
Allan will cover. If I let my imagination run wild there are some intriguing
possiblities like a mutated version of "Strawbery Fields Forever" with a wild
Holdsworth solo over the backwards drums or something a little more conservative
like "Get Back" with Belew singing and playing rhythm guitar and Allan on lead.

Subject: A Review: (Japanese) WT+3

With the help of Atavachron contributor Andre Cutair I was able to obtain
a copy of the Japanese Wardenclyffe Tower release.

It was costly; especially since our Canadian dollar sits at less than $0.80
American!

'Tokyo Dream', for me, is well worth the high price of this disc. With
a crisper, more direct sound than on Road Games, Jimmy Johnson on bass,
supposedly Gordon Beck on keyboards (although I suspect that it is simply
Allan on overdubbed SynthAxe comping and ornamentation), and a long,
incredibly expressive, utterly gorgeous electric guitar solo over what
seems to be three or four repeats of the solo section, the tune speaks
to me anew (as did the guitar version of Looking Glass that, of late, has
been performed live by the group).

'The Un-Merry-Go-Round (Part 4)' That beautifully introspective passage
(does anyone remember Christopher Hoard's sci-fi description of the piece
in Reaching for the Uncommon Chord?) again featuring Johnson (who moves
much more fluidly through the changes than did Gary Willis on Metal Fatigue),
AH, Chad (who plays very, very richly... leaning towards fills that borrow
from or embellish the guitar gestures... a la Husband), and a long
piano solo by Gordon Beck. Lovely.

'The Un-Merry-Go-Round (Part 5)' That dark, main theme. AH, JJ, CW with
Allan soloing on the baritone guitar. THE MASTERING JOB HERE IS AN UTTER
DISASTER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The piece *fades*, yes FADES
right in the middle of the solo, and then returns AS IF SOMEONE WERE
DEMONSTRATING HOW NEAT VOLUME CONTROL *REALLY* IS. Aargh.... OK. :)
Really nice lines in the solo... IF IT DIDN'T THEN AGAIN FADE TO NOTHINGNESS
A FEW SECONDS LATER!!! I wonder if Allan knows this.

The manner in which the extra tracks appear on the disc stink of another
rip-off job. I wonder just how Allan could allow this to be released.
Did someone have a extra DAT machine in the studio that day and then find
a party within Polydor (Japan) to sell the tape to. A 1992 version of
the 1975 Velvet Darkness. My manager's wife is Japanese and is helping
me compile a translation of the liner notes. I'll submit them in a few
weeks time.

As far as the basic WT cuts are concerned, I really enjoy 'Sphere of
Innocence' and 'Zarabeth' for their return to the complex and expressive
chordal work. Chad's playing on the title track is richer and more
Husband-like than he's ever shown. As a composition, I love the way the
tension is built by chords being held for just longer or just shorter than
would be expected. In particular, several of the chords are held for
three bars; allowing the soloists and Chad to build in anticipation of the
next change -- Awesome. I am not too fond of neither Hunt's 'Dodgy Boat'
nor Chad's 'Questions' tune. For me the level of the writing and the
(for lack of a better word) 'depth' of the tune hardly matches AH's. I
wish the track space had been used for AH's tunes -- a longer 'Oneiric
Moor', for example. '5 to 10', especially the solo and the emotion therein,
simply screams!

I really don't know much about this, but I noticed that Allan is still
using the Rocktron preamp - at least on this last tour. So I wouldn't say
he's dropped that brand. I purchased a Rocktron, but not because Allan's
name was associated with it, so it was one piece of equipment that I
recognized in his setup. I scrolled through a few of his presets after
the show, one that caught my eye was named "GONAD", but I didn't think to
jot down the parameter settings. I'm curious to know if he actually uses
something similar to the presets that have his name on them, or if he's
moved on to new sounds since designing the presets that come in the unit's

As far as I recall, "oneiric" (adj.) means that which pertains to dreams or
dreaming, and of course a moor is a wind-swept landscape of the kind often
found in England. The definitive one has to be Dartmoor, on the way to
Cornwall. Go there on a cold, foggy, December day, and drive by the prison
that lies at the intersection of the two roads that cross the moor. It's
very oneiric.

Subject: Re: Allan the "whore"

While Allan frequently changes the equipment he uses in his never-ending search
for a better sound, calling him a "whore" is a bit harsh. I'm sure he still
uses Rocktron products, for example; at least the Holdsworth Juice Extractor
he developed with Rocktron. According to the latest interviews he still uses
Boogie amplifiers. The only manufacturer whose product he had endorsed in the
past whom he "dropped" would probably be Steinberger. The reason in economics,
it would have cost too much to have Steinberger make his baritone guitars (or
perhaps Bill Delap had specific design ideas that appealed to Allan) and the
fact that Steinberger was recently dumped by Gibson.

Subject: More (accurate) news

Ok, just spoke to Allan a little while ago, and here are some
completely accurate tidbits (some of the last post was heresay from
related musicians I met in Montreal):

- Allan's plate is *FULL* for 1993! It looks like he's in overdrive
right now. In fact, he sounded pretty stressed out when I spoke to
him.

- Believe it or not, he's FINISHED recording the basic tracks for the
last Restless release titled "Hard Hat Area", due for release in
January 1994. He'll have it mixed and finished by mid-September at the
latest, although, as he said, he "hates working to deadlines".
However, he may have no choice in the matter, because...

- He has a collaboration album with Andrea Marcelli coming
up immediately thereafter, which he's quite excited about. Marcelli is
on a major label in Japan. Allan hinted that this album may have
something to do with his next label deal as well, but he was reticent
to speak about it. I think he's afraid of jinxing it!

- AND... the *BIG* news.. this Bruford project is for real! And I
don't think it's really "financially motivated" as I said previously..
the players...? Are you ready?

ALLAN HOLDSWORTH, BILL BRUFORD, DJANGO BATES & SKULI...

Unbelievable... django bates (possibly the most interesting jazz
composer of the last 20 years) with bruford and holdsworth. I have *no
idea* where a cornball like Skuli fits in though, although this is
only my opinion.

Currently, they're searching for a solid record deal (what else is
new?) and are trying to escape some legal wrangles with former labels
(what else is new?) before going full steam ahead, but he sounded
fairly optimistic about the group's chances.

- He has no idea about "Road Games" on CD, in fact, he's lost track.
He doesn't seem to care either. Malcolm Humes pointed out to me that
the company chasing down this "on his behalf" are selling bootleg CDs,
and bootleg videotapes of "Tokyo Dreams" (which is already a
bootleg!), so I'm really skeptical about this. In Allan's words
"They're not doing it for me, they're doing it for themselves".

So there ya have it.. oops, I forgot "Hard Hat Area" features "the
same band", however I didn't clear up whether this was his current
touring band (skuli, steve, gary) or the Wardenclyffe Tower gang. He
said he's REALLY happy with the way it's turning out though, which is
a rare thing to hear to say the least.

Looks like he's a busy boy! Good to hear.
